ben, hard at work

ben is going to work every day in rehovot. finally being assigned to a project, as of this week. still on a trial period, but things are very exciting and rather challenging. i like being at the weizmann, its a cool place to be and lots of really interesting people there. i have dropped one course that was taking a lot of time so i will have a lot more time in the lab to contribute, so thats a real plus! the campus is stunning, there are over 100 foreign trees that were brought in 50 years ago, from madagascar, india, africa, america, australia, indonesia, etc. makes for a really colourful scene. the cats are more intelligent at weizmann! must be as a result of all the animal testing (i'm not trained for that yet). the health and safety talk was funny. i think the participants had a far better understanding of important information like chemical reactions and ionising radiations... our first speaker was called 'yael' and the second one was called 'shira'! we had a little demo whereby we dropped chemicals on the floor and 'dealt' with them. basically just spill vermiculite on the area (highly absorbing) and dustpan and brush. i had a vision of scientists all over campus flinging vermiculite everywhere, its basically kitty litter, no wonder there are so many cats on campus.

i get a car pool every day with the man in charge of the chemical disposal at weizmann. he collects, and sorts all the stuff for 'delivery' to external facilities. some gets burned (great...), some shipped to germany (whom know how to separate chemicals cheaply, and usefully), and some gets buried in massive canisters in pipes in the ground, hmmm, long term?! my guy said that that at least the burnt fumes go straight to lebanon, syria and iraq!

in summary, there are lots of cool things going on. still hoping to get a full acceptance. excited and really ready for anything (i hope!)
